  1. The scene where Somnambulist under the control of Caligari going into the bedroom of the daughter in an attempt to kill her but then pauses as he falls under self control to his attraction. Instead of him stabbing her with the knife, he reaches down with his hand to touch her face in an affectionate and admiring way. The woman panics in fear and rage trying to fight him away and off her. Still under control of his own desire he flees with her from the room. The woman is scared but along the run with her in Somnambulist arms, while trying to get away from the chase of several men trying to rescue her, Somnambulan falls weak and die due to the lack of energy and nutrients required to survive because during the scene when the authorities came to Caligari's to investigate the murders his feeding was cut short by the interruption. Later the woman reveals it was Cesare. Francis is astonished and in disbelief of this news because he is under the illusion that Cesare was in his coffin the entire time he kept watch over Caligari's place and that the man the police had in custody was the murderer. The coffin is then searched only to find that who Francis thought was Cesare was in fact a mannequin. You see power, gloom, gory, fear, and deception in this film which relates to Nihilistic themes. Expressionism in this film reveals the internal emotions of the characters through motions and facial expressions of the actors, the gloom through the lighting and dark colors and clothing, gory through the sneaking, creeping, make up and killing motion, and suspense, and deception through non actual events being portrayed as actual.

Keisha Ballard 2/7/15
Part 1
"Dada is a new tendency in art. One can tell this from the fact that until now, nobody knew anything about it and tomorrow everyone will be talking about it. Dada comes from the dictionary. It is simple. In French it means "hobby horse". In German it means "goodbye", "get off my back", be seeing you sometime". In Romanian: "yes, indeed, you are right, that's it, But of course, yes, definitely, right". And so forth".

Dada is a new style of art on the rise. This is understood by the fact that one day prior to it being displayed and spoken about in Zurich, a city in switzerland, no one had any idea that it existed. The meaning of Dada is what ever you want it to be. A definition of a word in the dictionary can be picked at random and Dada will be the synonym to the word of choice. This is why in French it means, "hobby horse', and in German it means "goodbye", in Romanian it means " yes", etc. As far as Dada is concerned you can go on and on attaching a meaning to it that is suitable for you. Dada truly has no meaning and is truly just a movement against the middle class.

The author is simply trying to express that Dada is what you want it to be. True or false, real or fake, realistic or illusional, it was a representation of the perception and criticism of one during the era they lived. I chose this quote as it was challenging to truly grasp and idea and understanding of what Dada art was and represented.I am not sure if I am on the mark and still require some clarity, but it was interesting  to me that Dada didn't have a global meaning. Daily we as people have our own perception about our way of life and other's. Daily we criticize how we and other' live. So in a more modernized way, using things like televised media, photos, news paper cartoons, and articles to depict through stories, pictures and words the perception and criticism of the difficult and controversial times people live in and the wars that are resulting from one nation's beliefs and desires against another's.

Part 2

Edvard Munch - expressionism

According to Bio.com's article, Edvard was born in the mid 1800's. Munch attended college for one year studying engineering before he found a new passion for art and decided to attend school for art. Munch studied art for three years and later received a scholarship. Edvard's first art form of expressionism was that of his painting "The Sick Child" which represented his feeling behind the lost of his sister. During his time in France living off of state scholarships he produced a  set of paintings titled "Frieze of Life". "The Scream" which professor included in lecture was one of his most prestigious pieces. Munch later bumped into illness, alcoholic, mental, and physical. Although he no longer produced any great paintings after his transition, he continued to pain until he passed."often depicting his deteriorating condition and various physical maladies in his work". Edvard Munch-Melancholy-1892
In this piece I see some dull, low and gloomy colors. It appears to be evening. I see a man who appears to be sitting and thinking about something pressing upon his spirit. The black shirt implies he is in a low place and he is dressed according to how he feels. While he appears to be trying to figure out how to resolve his hidden issue behind him in the distance appears to be two people communicating. They are either about to get on a boat or have just gotten off. The water is still and the sun is setting. The title implies the man is sad or upset about something. It leaves me to wonder if the scene in the distance is a thought or memory about a pleasant relationship he once had that he no longer has.

Herman Hesse Novel assignment

" Besides the Brahmans, Siddhartha joins with the ascetic Semanas who he joins with at first after leaving his father. After learning techniques of meditation, fasting, and other acts of self deciliter, Siddhartha begins to grow tired with the lifestyle as he begins to suspect that all this self control is unnecessary and ultimately fails to do what it is supposed to -- lead to salvation:"

"What is meditation? What is leaving one's body? What is fasting? What is holding one
breath? It is fleeing from self, it is a short escape of the agony of being a self, it is a
short numbing of the senses against the pain and pointlessness of life. The same escape
The same short numbing is what the driver of an ox-cart finds in the inn, drinking a
few bowls of rice wine or fermented coconut milk. Then he won't feel this self any
more, then he won't feel the pains of life any more, then he finds a short numbing of the
of the senses. When he falls asleep over his bowl of rice wine, he'll find the same what
Siddhartha and Govinda find when they escape their bodies through long exercise,
staying in the non self. This is how it is, oh Govinda. "
Herman Hesse is expressing here that Siddhartha after leaving his dad not only bonds with the entire world but the religious brotherhoods that practice abstinence from appeasement or fulfillment through things or actions considered sinful or go against a religious or moral principle. Some time later Siddhartha becomes worn out by the discipline techniques as he draws upon the idea that maybe self discipline is worthless and may never direct one's soul to the everlasting safe place from harm or danger:

Siddhartha questions hisself, what is meditation, leaving one's body, fasting, holding one's
breath. He answers, it is running from who you are, being you, fighting against one's desires, it
is a get away from any form of suffering of being you, it is a self controlled inability of seeing,
hearing, feeling, tasting, or smelling to resist the hurt and uselessness of life. This get away for
a ascetic Semana is the same get away for a man without any religious practice or brotherhood,
It is the same get away for the sinner in a hotel indulging in alcoholic beverages. The man
that indulges in alcohol just like the man who meditates will not be who he was before his
drink, he too will be numb to the suffering of life, and the five senses. He too feels what
Siddhartha and his friend Govinda feels when they have outer body experiences through
extensive self discipline practices. He now feels like if at th end of th day being religious or not
bares the same result, then what is all the self discipline techniques for. He now sees it as a
          waste.

This passage is important to me because it allows me to see how one thinks about or views something like life based on the experiences of the environment they live in, the people they are influenced by, the life they live according to environment and culture, their own perceptions of the world and the practices of the world around them, and finally how or why their choices for their life are what they are. This allows me to respect the differences in individuals, while recognizing there is still a sameness or oneness to some degree in us all.

Expressionism:  Edvard Munch The Scream - 1893
In this painting I see colors that are both bright and a little dark. The way the cars are so bright and mixed in the back appears to be confusing and illustrates to me a sunset glowing over the water. I see movement of  the water  and in the water from two boats. The person in the front appears to be either shocked by something or scared of something. I don't see any actions in the painting that depict either of the two. Based on the tittle, I lean more toward the scared side. I concluded that the act of holding the ears and screaming implied the person was screaming from some form of stress, losing control to the point of the inability to calm down. I see to figures of people in the distance and they appear to be very calm which lead me to believe that the screaming person might just be having some sort of break down. This relates to nihilism to me in a sense that it paints the picture of destruction, self destruction in this case from the inability to be th internal battle.

                                                                    German Economy

During the 1900' and early 21st century Germany economic system was unstable and suffering. Tax cuts and high employment wages were two factors that contributed to Germany's 2008/2009 deficit. High unemployment rates were a result of high wages later forcing the reduction of wages. Due to the low wages the government implemented stimulus and tax cuts which added to the deficit. The government as a result of the deficit had to increase taxes. As a result of tax revenue and spending the financial deficit was lowered by 0.8%contributing to a 2011/2012 surplus of 0.1%. Germany has begun to replace nuclear power with renewable energy creating continued revenue. This compounded with being an advanced in technology, having a skilled labor force and revenue from exporting goods such as machinery, vehicles, electronics, food, beverages, etc is what allows Germany to be the 5th largest economy in the world. Germany's 2013 GDP in purchasing power, exchange rate, and growth rate are all sufficient and is thus a few keys to Germany current economical stability.
"Christianity was from the beginning, essentially and fundamentally, life's nausea and disgust with life, merely concealed behind, masked by, dressed up as faith in "another" or "better" life."

Christianity which is a form of religion where a group of people are devoted to a personal set of beliefs or has been forced to accept Christianity as a practice that dates back to the first century. Original the practice served as a form of support to deal with the uneasiness and uncomfortable state of life's unpleasant emotions deriving from fear, anger, sadness, or deficiency. These emotions were simply hidden, camouflaged and disguised with confidence and belief that the God they believed in would spiritually bestow them with the direction in which to follow, conseqy resulting in a better life.

Today Christianity currently exist. According to Pew Research Center, in 2010 Christian population was a little over two billion. This I dictates that Christianity is incredibly growing in comparison to the estimated 600 million Christians calculated in 1910 (Pew Research Center). Christianity today is consistent with that of the first century. Individuals are called to the churches through evangelism (an individual or group of individuals calling people to request forgiveness for the things they have done which they belief are not morally correct and being asked to trust and follow God according to the Christian doctrine). Once a person or group of people accept this doctrine they are expected to follow the lWs of the doctrine. Being somewhat a religious individual, in my Christian community we are still taught that there is a God and God is the highest power. He can take care of all of one's needs and grant one his/her heart's desires if one trust in him, belief and walk in his word. I have witnessed, continue to witness and taken part in Christianity, in the act of praying, worshiping, having faith in the lord, suppressing all nausea and disgust in life and masking it with faith that God would prevail; therefore providing direction, miraculously causing closed doors to open, thus creating a pathway to one obtaining the desired way of life.
