5/9 The work of art in the age of mechanical reproduction

One might generalize by saying: the technique of reproduction detaches the reproduced object from the domain of tradition. By making many reproductions it substitutes a plurality of copies for a unique existence. And in permitting the reproduction to meet the beholder or listener in his own particular situation, it reactivates the object reproduced. These two processes lead to a tremendous shattering of tradition which is the obverse of the contemporary crisis and renewal of mankind. Both processes are intimately connected with the contemporary mass movements. Their most powerful agent is the film. Its social significance, particularly in its most positive form, is inconceivable without its destructive, cathartic aspect, that is, the liquidation of the traditional value of the cultural heritage (p. 221).

Film is a form of mechanical reproduction. It is one way our culture, Beliefs and lives are impacted. The method of recreating events through film allow truth to be turned into half truths. It is allowing fiction to explain non fiction. The more and more something is reproduced/ substituted, the less and less real or realistic it becomes. When reproduction is left in the eyes and ears of the beholder, that person then gets to decide what is truth and then attempts to restore the effectiveness of the already reproduced product. This type of reproduction destroys beliefs and therefore breaks down the cultural value system thus leaving societies blinded, thus leaving them to fall subject to false judgement and bad decision making thus leaving them to self destruction. " T.V tells lies to your vision."

I chose this passage because I often question film's based on true stories, and how much they sincerely represent the accuracy of the true and original story. When reproduction is substituted by multiple copies, it takes/chips away from the original production.
